Junior Pierce Pennaz became a member of the Orono wrestling team two years ago. He worked hard in practice and went to matches to cheer on his teammates, but he never got the chance to actually participate in a match.
Until all that hard work and patience paid off when his coach Joe McPherson arranged an exhibition match for Pennaz.
The mat was lined with supporters and teammates to witness Pennaz’s dream finally be fulfilled.
His opponent Isaiah Brown of Rogers High School didn’t go easy on Pennaz. Pennaz performed with strength and determination and won his first ever match.
“Pierce did awesome in his first match last week. He has been working hard over the year to get a chance to wrestle at one of our duals. It was great to be able to get him on the mat. Everyone at the dual that night was excited to see Peirce wrestle.” head coach Joe McPherson said, “It was one of the best coaching moments I have had, to see his teammates on the side of the match cheering him on. Pierce is always excited to be at practice and be part of of the team.”
This win was special for not only Pennaz but also for his teammates and supporters.
“There are times in life that stand out… this is one of them. Pierce’s mom and I would like to thank wrestler Isaiah Brown of Rogers High School for making Pierce’s dream of being a wrestler come true. Thanks, too, to the entire Orono community for embracing those with special needs.” Pierce’s dad Steve Pennaz said in a facebook post along with a video of the victorious win.
