The Orono high school boys hockey team has been playing well this year, and have reached a spot in the top 5 ranks in class 1A hockey. The team has a conference record of 6-4-1 and an overall record of 9-5-1. They were originally ranked first, but after a challenging set of games, they are now ranked fifth.
The team fought hard against a talented Minneapolis team losing 2-3 in a challenging game. Minneapolis is a single A team that Orono has seen as a strong foe for the past couple of years.
The boys then played Eastridge, a AA school which they ended up losing 3-0 but were snakebit as they outshot them 29-19.
The final and probably their toughest game was Minnetonka, another AA school who is ranked first in their class. Orono fought a hard game only losing 5-2 with one of the goals being an empty net.
When the boys broke their losing streak against Delano in a 3-2 overtime winner, they went on to beat Mound 2-1 and Waconia 8-2. They lost their most recent game on Jan. 16 to Hutchinson 2-3.
This well-formed team has a promising season, due to a group of players who have been playing together throughout most of their hockey careers.
