On Nov. 11, 1918 the armistice to end World War I was signed. Every year to this day we celebrate this anniversary (Veterans Day), and recognize all the men and women who have served in the military. This is an important day to show the veterans our respect and honors as we acknowledge their contribution to our nation.
In past years at Orono High School, the school has held events and assemblies, gathering students to celebrate this special day. Orono did the program in 2011 and 2014, and is planning on possibly bringing it back next year.
Many people may confuse Memorial Day with Veterans Day. Memorial Day (the fourth Monday in May) honors American service members who died in service to their country or as a result of injuries incurred during battle, while Veterans day pays tribute to all American veterans-living or dead-but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
“I feel it is important that students recognize some of their community members as veterans,” band teacher Mr. Arnold said, “My two favorite things about the program, are hearing Maureen Banavige speak. She’s an Orono parent, and high ranking officer in the air force. The other thing is when the band plays the Armed Forces Medley which contains all of the service songs, each veteran will stand when their respective song is played so everyone is able to see who has served in what branch, and also hear the music of our military.”
