What’s heartbroken, relatable and red all over? Taylor Swift’s new album.

Relationships with Joe Jonas, Taylor Lautner, Jake Gyllenhaal, John Mayer, and most recently Conor Kennedy have influenced her album. Taylor Swift is known for writing songs about ex-boyfriends. The twenty-two year old country singer has four albums under her cowgirl boots, but does her newest album, Red, live up to its expectations? Or, did Swift finally reach the end of her heartbreak writing days?
The first single released off of Red was “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.” The song, being the perfect post-breakup anthem, skyrocketed to the top of the charts when it was released.

Swift set the tone for her new album by releasing this track which incorporates a harmony of easy going guitar rifts and a sweet, pop beat. This slight change in style is present throughout the album as Swift continues to grow as an artist. Rumor has it that this song is inspired by actor Jake Gyllenhaal. Whether it is actually based off of him or not, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” is relatable to anyone going through a break up.

“I Knew You Were Trouble” describes the guy who is bad from the start. Swift wrote the lyrics, “I knew you were trouble when you walked in / So shame on me now / Flew me to places I’d never been / Now I’m lying on the cold hard ground,” to make up the strong chorus of the song. Bass and techno beats are embedded into “I Knew You Were Trouble”, setting the tone for that bad boy on any girl’s mind.

The title song, “Red” is all about a guy that whirled a girl around an emotional roller coaster. “Loving him is like driving a new Maserati down a dead-end street / Faster than the wind, passionate as sin, ended so suddenly. This line stands out, emphasizing a love that burns quickly before halting at a screeching stop; a love so innocent and powerful that just disappears.

The verses, paired with a catchy tune, make for one of the strongest songs on the album. This song is definitely relatable to teen girls because it perfectly describes the guy who is difficult to get over.

Swift knows how to write a good love song, but she also know how to change it up. The song entitled, “22”, on her new album follows “Fifteen” from her second album, Fearless. “22” is a going out anthem about living life to the fullest, even though teens are young and will make mistakes. It’s about forgetting what happened during the day and just letting it all out.

At the age of twenty-two, Swift describes exactly what her outlook on life is right now. “We’re happy free confused and lonely at the same time / It’s miserable and magical.” Songs like this balance out all of the breakup songs on her album.

Red is the continuation of Swift maturing as an artist. She begins to turly define herself in this album. Swift is headlining her own tour in 2013 and takes the stage in Minneapolis on Sept. 7 and 8.

Even if the guys she writes about remain a mystery, one is solved: Red is the album to listen to.
