Skylar Pierce, Features Editor

Skylar’s interest for journalistic writing blossomed her sophomore year, when she took Journalism I. Skylar would describe herself as an awkward and funny individual because she enjoys being different.

Being actively involved in a church setting, Skylar tries to live her life to see the best in people.  It is in her nature to make sure to help people live better lives.  She is employed at Caribou Coffee in Long Lake, and spends a lot of her time outside of school at her job.

When Skylar moved to Kentucky last school year, she was involved in the ROTC--Reserve Officer Training Course.  One thing that they made sure to teach the people involved is to live and act with powerful leadership skills.  ROTC was offered as an everyday class, teaching students about active military lives.  Though Skylar is back at Orono, she still talks with her Sergeant. She is now a member of the National Guard, and learned about her passion while working through the ROTC program.

“I want to better myself as a person and become more strict,” Pierce said.  She wants to build up a character that influences others to better their self.

Skylar is also actively involved with mission work through her church.  Skylar was inspired to do more mission work after she went to Haiti.  She was heartbroken when she witnessed the conditions that the people lived in.  They worked through a program titled Healing Haiti; this program is the only one that brings and gives clean water to Haitians for free.  Skylar cares deeply about people.  She would rather help other people with their homework than work on her own.  She puts people above her.

Skylar said that if she could live in any other decade, she would want to live in the 60’s or 70’s to be with the hippies. “I want to be at  Woodstock more than anything.  That would be the life.  I think being a hippy would be the best thing ever.” She mentioned the fact that there was war going on, yet; many people were able to find a way around the conflict and come together to become stronger.

Skylar plans on going to the University of Minnesota.  She would like to be a part of their ROTC program, as well.

“If you are reading this, and you think I’m cool, come say ‘hi’ because I like meeting new people,”  she said.

Skylar claims that she likes cats and has a micro munchkin cat.
