The Visit: Unsafe after 9:30 p.m.

Night Shyamalan strikes again! This time instead of a typical thriller, he adds intentional comedy to the story. Becca and Tyler, the protagonists of the story, decide to visit their grandparents for the first time. Becca, an inspiring director, films their visit with their grandparents.

After visiting for a while, Tyler realizes his grandparents aren’t who they seem to be. Meanwhile, Becca denies that anything could be wrong with their grandparents besides that they’re old.

Shyamalan directed and wrote The Visit. M. Shyamalan also directed many other popular thriller films such as, The Sixth Sense, Signs, Unbreakable and The Village. The Visit is rated PG-13 and the length is 94 minutes. The Visit came out on September 11, 2015.

Becca, played by Olivia DeJonge, had subpar acting skills for her big hit movie. Not knowing what kind of actress she was, it was refreshing to see a new face. She was the annoying big sister who didn’t want to believe that her grandparents just weren’t right. However, I have her acting a 3/5 because at times it seemed really forced.

Ed Oxenbould, the actor of Tyler, was the comedic relief that the movie needed. His acting at times was a little forced, however he brought much needed comedy into the film which I believe landed him a 4/5 in acting.

Nana, portrayed by Deanna Dunagan, was spectacular in her performance. She brought out the creepiness needed to make it the thriller M. Night Shyamalan wanted. Being the main focus, she brought eeriness that was just enough to make one creeped out. I gave her acting a 4/5.

Overall, I give this movie a 4.5/5 because the supporting characters such as Pop and the Mom, were essential to helping the story flow.

The music and sound of the film I gave a 3/5 because there is not much dialogue in the beginning and the music is very minimal. At jumpscares, there are sounds but that is typical of a thriller.

Compared to The Village, the same plot twist at the end is a must. However in The Visit, the plot was not as developed as it could have been and was very simple. Overall, the movie was given 3/5 stars because the plot could have been more developed however, M. Night Shyamalan did a good job with bringing in comedy to a thriller.
Remember Nana’s most important rule: “Don’t leave your room after 9:30 p.m.”
