Charlie Sheen, what happened?

Ryan Japs
Staff ReporterWhatever happened to the man we once knew in the nice bowling shirt making us laugh every Monday night on CBS? His lifestyle caught up with him, but despite being a lovable rascal that gets into trouble every now and then nothing has changed about Charlie Sheen.

Born Carlos Irwin Estevez, he has been stuck in the limelight since birth, being the youngest son of renowned actor Martin Sheen. Charlie, too, got the acting bug and decided to make a career of it himself. The first major role that he appeared in was the 1984 movie Red Dawn. This put Sheen on the map and scored him various other successful roles throughout the 90’s and early 2000’s.

The role that he is currently famous for was his reprised role as Charlie Harper in the hit CBS sitcom Two and a Half Men. The show portrayed Sheen as a man with a lot of money and enjoys the pleasures of women, drugs, and alcohol. Sheen did not have to work hard to give that performance both on and off stage. The program aired on Sept. 22 in 2003 and was only officially suspended this Feb. 24.

Reasons for cancelling the show were complicated, but main reasons were because of the incidents that Sheen was involved in. This whole mess originated back to Oct. 26. 2010 when the actor was removed from a hotel room after causing 7,000 dollars worth of damage. The police found Sheen naked and under the influence of alcohol and cocaine with a porn star locked in the bathroom for her safety. This left Sheen with a bad image for CBS and where his career took a turn for the worse.

He checked into an undisclosed rehabilitation clinic in January and showed signs of recovery. His show was on a temporary hiatus until he was deemed fit to work again. That is, until he came out and gave several interviews about his position to several news stations. He gave rambling, incoherent answers to the interviewers, bad mouthed his co- workers, and directly called out his director, Chuck Lorre.

“I embarrassed him (Lorre) in front of his children and the world by healing at a pace that his uninvolved mind cannot process. OK last I checked Chuck, I’ve spent, I think, I don’t know, the last decade effortlessly and magically converting your tin cans into gold and the gratitude I get is this charlatan chose not to do his job, which is to write. Clearly someone who believes he is above the law. Well, you’ve been warned dude. Bring it,” Sheen said on Feb. 24 in an interview with CBS  responding to a question about if he was ready to go back to work.

When hearing this, Lorre, Warner Brothers, and CBS gathered together and after careful consideration decided to fire Sheen from the show. After Sheen got the news he threatened to sue Warner Brothers for not paying for the rest of his contract. Sheen was already the highest paid actor on television, receiving 2 million an episode and about 40 million per season.

Currently, now that he is unemployed, Sheen announced on Mar. 10 that he is going on a tour entitled Charlie Sheen LIVE: My Violent Torpedo of Truth/Defeat is Not an Option in the major cities across America. His tickets sold out in 18 minutes and he has already planned more cities to visit for the tour. He also plans to donate 1$ from every ticket to the American Red Cross for the relief effort in Japan.

Whatever will happen to the star is up in the air. People love to see their beloved actors turn into train wrecks and Charlie Sheen is no exception right now. Regardless if he gets clean or not, the public has spoken. 26 percent of 700 Americans surveyed have expressed a ‘much more’ or ‘somewhat more’ favorable view of the actor even after all recent controversy.

Sheen and his rock and roll life style have dominated the headlines for weeks and this will certainly stick with him for the rest of his career. This new chapter in his life will bring lots more news and attention to the entertainer and keep America happy for a long time.
