New trends dance into Prom fashion for 2014

A girl’s dress is arguably the most important aspect of Prom. Here is your go-to guide for 2014 Prom fashion.

Plain fabric: out. A dress with a lace overlay: in. In 2014, this new lace trend highlights the feminine side of lace in large amounts, not just in small detailings. Pair a lace dress with minimal accessories and simple shoes in order to avoid distractions from the true star of Prom: the dress.

When it comes to Prom, one of the most challenging decisions in finding a dress is selecting the right color. This year, striking bright hues are in: red, orange, purple, blue.

For Prom-goers with classical taste, black and white are the colors to wear. For the daring, the new ombre dress trend is fresh off designer dress shelves, and is certain to leave a fashionable impression.

Next comes the notorious long versus short dress debate. For 2014, a continued trend for Prom is the high low dress. This solves the battle between long and short dresses because it is the perfection combination of both lengths.

Another option (new this year) is a short Prom dress with a sheer overlay. The dress itself is the length of a shorter piece, usually mid-thigh, with thin fabric (tulle) attached to the dress that subtly shows off the bottom of legs by the sheer effect the fabric gives off.

As far as the top of Prom dresses for 2014, a continued trend includes one-shouldered or one sleeved dresses. One-shouldered dresses have a flirtier look to them, while one sleeved dresses remain on the elegant side.

A classic neckline for Prom dresses is the sweetheart neckline. This trend is universal; it is flattering on any body shape and makes the neck appear longer.

Along with Prom trends, there are also Prom disasters when it comes to finding a dress. Avoid pastel colors this year–they tend to wash out skin tones before summer tans begin to set in.

Also, be on the lookout for too many sequin or rhinestone details. A little can make the right impression and add some character to a dress, but overdone sparkles leave a dress looking like an enlarged disco ball that is distracting to the eyes.

Another daunting task is picking out the best shoes. In 2014, open-toed heels are a huge trend because they show off the latest pedicures. Shoes are a great place to have some sparkly details without overdoing it on the dress.

For height, shoes should be comfortable. Keep in mind that Prom is about dancing and having an amazing night, not awkwardly shuffling around in six inch heels and showing up to school the next week limping.

Length, color, style, accessories. There are so many elements that go into selecting the perfect Prom dress. In the end, go with the dress that oozes confidence and personality.
