For two weeks every year., Melbourne Park is home to the Australian Open and this year was no exception.  The Australian Open’s official website stated that tournament was held from Jan. 17 to Jan. 30. And this year’s tournament had it’s share of upsets and shockers.
In the men’s bracket, it was a changing of the guard.  Past champions Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal were both knocked out of the finals this year.  According to Espn.com, Nadal was beat by fellow Spaniard Roger Ferrer and Federer was eliminated by this year’s champion, Serbian Novak Djokovic.
Djokovic played England’s Andy Murray for the grand slam title.  According to The Guardian, Murray was expected to break England’s 75 year rut of not winning a grand slam title.  The final set scores for the men’s final were 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 Djokovic.  According to New York Times, this is the second time Djokovic has taken home the Australian title.
“This is for my country,” Djokovic said of his native country Serbia.  He then praised second-time finalist Murray by saying, “We have known each other for such a long time and it was really difficult to play against you tonight,” he said, “Hopefully you will have another chance to win a Grand Slam title; with your talent you will.”
For the women’s final, it came down to China’s Li Na and U.S. Open champion Kim Clijsters stated Yahoo Sports.  It was a close match but the final set scores were  3-6, 6-3, 6-3 Clijsters. “I thought Clijsters played great and deserved to win,” stated senior Natalie Dittrich.
“Today I was able to stay very aggressive throughout it all, keep my unforced errors down, and put a lot of pressure on her. I’m very happy with the way I ended this today,” said Clijsters on her win.  “I just do the best I can. I hope Chinese tennis can grow faster, and I hope more people can get involved. It’s like a pyramid, more people playing, and you can achieve higher on the pyramid’s top.” said Na on her loss.
